Mark 9:2-13

Jul 20, 2025    Mitch Green

In this week’s message, we turn the corner into the second half of Mark’s Gospel—and into one of the most awe-inspiring moments in Jesus’ earthly ministry: the Transfiguration. As Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, He reveals His true identity—not just as a great teacher or miracle worker, but as the radiant, glorified Son of God.

We’ll walk verse-by-verse through Mark 9:2–13, unpacking the significance of the dazzling appearance, the presence of Moses and Elijah, and the voice from heaven commanding, “This is my beloved Son; listen to Him.” Some passages call for direct application; others, like this one, are meant to stretch our view of who Jesus is—fueling our faith and obedience in everything else He calls us to.

Big Idea: Jesus moves their faith to sight. He lets them see His glory.

We'll explore:

Why the “six days” detail matters

How the Transfiguration connects to Mount Sinai and the Old Testament

What it means that Jesus was “transfigured” before them

The significance of Moses and Elijah’s appearance

How this moment prepares the disciples (and us) for the cost of following Christ

The goal isn’t just to marvel at the moment—but to respond with faith, worship, and commitment.
